Choosing a disposal
Not every unit suits every kitchen. Size, power and compatibility with your sink and existing plumbing all matter, so it is worth getting advice before you buy.
Everyday use
- Run cold water while the disposal is operating
- Keep grease out of the drain
- Avoid starchy and fibrous scraps, which can clog the drain or jam the unit
- Follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions for your model
Odors and jams
Food residue left inside the unit is a common cause of odors. Before you clean or check the disposal, disconnect its power, and never reach into the grinding chamber. If it keeps jamming, humming or smelling, a plumber can find the cause.
