Why Does My Garbage Disposal Smell?

A smelly disposal usually means food residue is left behind inside the unit, often on the underside of the rubber splash guard (baffle) at the sink opening, where scraps collect out of sight and break down. Regular, gentle cleaning and a few habits generally take care of it.

Where the smell comes from

Small bits of food can cling to the grinding chamber and the baffle after each use. Grease and fats can coat surfaces and trap more residue. Over days, that material decays and produces the odor you notice at the sink.

Clean it safely

  • Disconnect the power first. Switch off and unplug the unit, or turn off its circuit, before cleaning or checking anything.
  • Never put your hand into the grinding chamber, even with the power off.
  • Follow your model's care instructions. Owner's manuals describe the cleaning method the manufacturer approves for that unit.
  • Remove the baffle only if your manual says it is removable. If it is, it can be washed by hand, then put it back in place before you run the disposal again.
  • Avoid harsh drain cleaners and never mix cleaning chemicals. Combining products can release dangerous fumes, and some chemicals can damage the unit or your pipes.

Habits that help prevent odors

  • Run a strong flow of cold water while grinding and for a short time after the motor stops, so scraps are flushed down the drain.
  • Keep grease, oils and fats out of the sink.
  • Use the disposal regularly so residue does not sit for long, and feed scraps in gradually.

What this guide does not cover

Clearing jams, taking the unit apart, or changing its wiring are jobs for a plumber or the manufacturer's service guidance, not general household cleaning.

When an odor needs a professional

If the smell keeps coming back after cleaning, or comes with slow draining, water backing up into the sink, or a leak under the cabinet, have the plumbing assessed. An odor alone cannot tell you whether the cause is the disposal, the drain line or something else, so avoid guessing at a sewer problem from smell alone.

Coast Plumbing Solutions offers garbage disposal repair and installation and professional drain cleaning. Request service online or call (805) 691-9905. For choosing a new unit, see our garbage disposal guide.
